The Sunday Rest Bill and the Trinity

We all know that Sunday laws are on the statute books of America, and many Seventh-day Adventists are waiting for the Sunday law to be enforced in fulfillment of the mark of the beast in Revelation 13. But what the majority of Seventh-day Adventists don’t realize, is that attached to the Breckinridge Sunday Law Bill was another ‘religious’ law concerning the Trinity. Take a look at the following concerning the Breckinridge Bill, of which A.T.Jones and other Adventist pioneer leaders spoke against:

“A Bill to prevent persons from being forced to labor on Sunday. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That it shall be unlawful for any person or corporation, or employe of any person or corporation in the District of Columbia, to perform any secular labor or business, or to cause the same to be performed by any person in their employment on Sunday, except works of necessity or mercy; nor shall it be lawful for any person or corporation to receive pay for labor or services performed or rendered in violation of this act. Any person or corporation, or employee of any person or corporation in the District of Columbia, who shall violate the provisions of this act, shall, upon conviction thereof, be punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars for every such offense: Provided, however, that the provisions of this act shall not be construed to apply to any person or persons who conscientiously believe in and observe any other day of the week than Sunday as a day of rest.” (Review and Herald, Jan.21, 1890, Vol.67, No.3, p.44; Also can be found in Arguments on the Breckinridge Sunday Bill pdf pg. 1)

The same day on which this bill was introduced, a decision was rendered by the District supreme judge on a famous Sunday prosecution, in which the court referred to an existing Sunday law in the District, but ruled that it was not now operative, and recommended that legislation be had on the point. The reference of the court to such a law stimulated us to look up the matter, when we found a Sunday law to which the court did not make any reference whatever. Taking this to some lawyers, they told us that the old law we had found was still binding. This is a very strict law, and provides that the offender shall pay a fine of 200 pounds of tobacco. But that which makes this law [Sunday law] appear so strange, is that it is found IN DIRECT CONNECTION with another statute which provides that any one who publicly denies the Trinity as commonly held, shall, for the first offense, have his tongue bored through, and for the third offense, suffer death without the benefit of the clergy. Possibly the reason why the promoters of the present Sunday law ignore the one now on the statutes, is because it is in the company of another law so barbarous in its make-up, thus showing the nature of the company Sunday laws of the past have always kept. Be this as it may, they seem determined to have another law that shall now “prevent persons from being forced to labor on Sunday.” The reader can judge for himself as to the probable reason for giving the bill such an incongruous title as it has…
We, the undersigned citizens of the District of Columbia, realizing the importance of the local legislation for the District now before Congress, and embodied in the “Bill to prevent persons from being forced to labor on Sunday,” presented in the House by Mr. Breckinridge, of Kentucky ; and appreciating the force of the views expressed in the opinion of the court upon the state of the Sunday laws in the District, as in the case of the People vs. Curtin, lately decided in the Supreme Court of the District by Judge Hagner, Judges James and Montgomery concurring, believe that it is desirable to take such measures as will bring this question clearly before all the citizens of the District ; and for this purpose append our names to a call for a general mass-meeting for the discussion of this measure in all its bearings. (Review and Herald, Jan.21, 1890, Vol.67, No.3, p.44)

On an analysis of this bill, I find the following to be its prominent features. I find in Section three, two exceptions,—“works of necessity or mercy,” and ” any person or persons who shall conscientiously believe in and observe any other day of the week than Sunday, as a day of rest.” A plain interpretation of this law would render unlawful the running of street-cars, railroad cars, and steamboats on Sunday ; also the delivery of letters or telegrams, or even driving carriages to church on Sunday. But these, and similar questions, would needs be referred to a police judge to decide. The services of a paid janitor or salaried organist of a church, or a third party (Prohibitionist) meeting, would need to be passed upon, as to whether secular or religious, as such meetings are frequently held, and such labor performed, upon Sunday. The intervention of policemen might also be called in. In the second place, could a professional surgeon receive pay for his Sunday labor? Would a professional physician and surgeon attend upon a patient with very great alacrity on Sunday, if he had no expectation of being paid for it? Where do you draw the line between what is necessary and what is not necessary? If I get my cook to prepare me a warm meal on Sunday, shall my cook and I be fined a hundred dollars for that? Again, who is to decide as to whether a person’s belief is ” orthodox” or not? This would be akin to the work of the Inquisition. And thus any one would have the means of gratifying malice, private spite, and personal revenge.” (Review and Herald, Feb.4, 1890, Vol.67, No.5, p.74)

“…In this connection let me say, gentlemen, that the District of Columbia has just the same kind of a Sunday law as that of Ohio. This law of the District of Columbia was in force when this book was issued which I hold in my hand, which was April 1, 1868; and I am told that this law (which I will read) was re-enacted in 1874. I now quote from the law. Section 1 provides that- ‘If any person shall DENY THE TRINITY, he shall, for the first offense, be bored through the tongue, and fined twenty pounds; … and for the second offense, the offender being thereof convict as aforesaid, shall be stigmatized by burning on the forehead with the letter B, and fined forty pounds; and for the third offense, the offender being thereof convict as aforesaid, shall suffer death, without the benefit of the clergy.’ Section l0 of the same law has this:- ‘No person whatever shall do any bodily labor on the Lord’s day, commonly called Sunday … Now, gentlemen, that law has never been repealed.”  (Arguments on the Breckinridge Sunday Bill pdf pg. 55)

“There is now, on the statute-books of this District, an old Maryland law which has never been repealed, under which a person convicted of denying the Trinity
, received the mark ‘B’ in his forehead [reading statute of date Oct. 26, 1723]. I see some here who would stand a bad chance under that law; for instance, my friend Dr. Shippen, pastor of the Unitarian church. I have read this law verbatim, because the present bill of Mr. Breckinridge seems to have been taken from it. Now, are we ready to go back 167 years in our legislation, to revive a law that had been rejected by the common sense of our ancestors? Such a law may be in place in countries where there is a union of Church and State; but it is out of place in this country, where no attempts upon the liberties of the citizen should be tolerated. Now, the only principle upon which a line of this bill could be justified, would be a “sanitary” principle; that is, assuming that it is necessary for health that a man should rest one day out of seven ; assuming also that it is the duty of Congress to see that he does not labor more than the six days, and to prescribe a certain day on which he should not work. But that theory has not been sustained by the courts; besides, a great many men do not need that restraint. They have plenty of rest, and a council of physicians would hardly say that it was necessary for them to rest on a certain day out of the seven. But the bill is sought to be justified by the principle that religious congregations should not be disturbed; but such congregations are already amply protected by law. (Review and Herald, Feb.4, 1890, Vol.67, No.5, p.74)

So what law on the statute books is in ‘direct connection’ to the Sunday rest bill? The law that anyone who publicly denies the trinity will be persecuted. And we know that according to Rome, Sunday is directly connected to their trinity god:

The feast of the Most Holy Trinity may well be regarded as the Church’s “Te Deum” of gratitude over all the blessings of the Christmas and Easter seasons; for this mystery is a synthesis of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost. This feast, which falls on the first Sunday after Pentecost, should make us mindful that actually every Sunday is devoted to the honor of the Most Holy Trinity, that every Sunday is sanctified and consecrated to the triune God. (

“Question 1092. What is Sunday, or the Lord’s Day in general? A. It is a day dedicated by the Apostles to the honour of the most holy Trinity.” (The Douay Catechism of 1649)

We read also from Review and Herald, under the heading, “SUNDAY ENFORCEMENT. The following is clipped from the interior of Nov. 1: —”

” The International Sunday Observance League, though only incorporated eight months ago, is making rapid strides toward giving us a peaceful Sabbath. Its object is to promote a more general and thorough observance of the law of God, as laid down in the fourth commandment; to the end that the desecration of the Christian Sabbath day, by unnecessary labor and amusements may be suppressed; that man may rest and be refreshed in body, mind, and soul; to maintain good morals and the peace and good order of society, and with this end in view, to establish State, provincial, and local organizations, whose object and purpose shall be to co-operate in the enactment and enforcement of laws for the suppression of all violations of the Sabbath day and to promote the highest and truest patriotism…

The reader will notice that the two objects, Sunday observance and patriotism, are in the above article closely combined together. But what possible connection has Sunday-keeping with patriotism? One is the observance of a church festival, the other the love of country
It will also be noticed that this ‘league’ [The International Sunday Observance League] has other plans besides the intention to prosecute those who will not bow to their man-made Sabbath. Perhaps they will prosecute those who do not believe in the Trinity. Their spiritual ancestors, the Puritans, considered the arrest and punishment of those who rejected this church dogma as something pleasing to the Deity. Our Unitarian friends should be on the alert. The doctrine of the Trinity and the sacredness of Sunday are BOTH orthodox plums of marvelous sweetness to the ministerial tooth. If all may be compelled to receive one, there is no good reason why all may not be required to accept the other. It is easily seen that this society is another agency to promote the religio-political crusade that is becoming so general all over our land, and which is hastening the fulfillment of the prophecy of Rev. 13 : 11-17. If a man must keep Sunday in order to be considered patriotic and a good citizen, then a non-Sunday observer, particularly if he keeps another day, may be accused as an enemy of the country—a dangerous character, to be dealt with by the State as his obstinacy deserves. To this time we are rapidly hasting. Can we not discern the signs of the times? (M. E. K., Review and Herald, Nov.20, 1894, Vol.71, No.46, p.730)

Its worth noting from the above statement, that there is this emphasis on being good citizens of the state (patriotism) connected with the compliance of “religio-political mandates and those who dissent will be looked upon as unpatriotic.

Question: Which common doctrine unites most of the churches in the Christendom today? It is the doctrine of the Trinity! See how Trinity doctrine is the core issue for ECUMENICAL GOD OF ROME. So Rome is uniting all the churches under its Trinity god ready for the mark to be enforced!

Now attached to the Sunday law bill in Ohio, we find the following significant exemption:

“The proviso of the Sunday law exempts those only who conscientiously observe the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath.” ( Arguments on the Breckinridge Sunday Bill pdf pg. 9 ).

So you would think the Seventh-day Sabbath keepers would be exempt? But remember, those who DENY the trinity would also be punished! Do you see the deception of Rome? Is this going to factor into the coming Sunday law? We will see. But the fact shows that this is not just about the Sunday law, as the Trinity god of Rome is closely connected to it.

Remember, you can be a Sabbath keeper and still be worshipping the beast by accepting the mark OR name, OR number of the beast. See our page: Mark OR Name OR Number of the Beast. It is imperative that we stand on the truth of God’s Word, and NOT follow the teachings of men.

Currently, within Adventism, there is a lot of agitation surrounding the doctrine of Trinity. Do not allow the church’s orthodoxy to dictate what the Bible teaches. Is Trinity teaching grounded in Scripture or is it a man-made doctrine? Let us be followers of Jesus Christ, not man! Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15. 

A recent article from Vatican News described Pope’s new book, “God and the World to Come”, which came out on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. Taken from the few excerpts from the book, Pope said, “we can heal injustice by building a new world order based on solidarity…”

Question: What is this solidarity of the new world order to be based on?

“Everything is interconnected, and this invites us to develop a spirituality of that GLOBAL SOLIDARITY which flows from the mystery of the TRINITY.” – Pope Francis, Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’

“the SOLIDARITY that binds the human family… must however always be placed within the horizon of the mysterious life of the Triune God, in whom we perceive an ineffable love shared by equal, though nonetheless distinct, Persons.” – Pope Benedict XVI, May 3, 2008

Clearly, the pope’s vision for that “global solidarity” of “the new world order” will “flow from the mystery of the trinity.”
